88-Key Standard
Pianos and Electronic Keyboards
The Ultimate Teaching Tool
88-key standard pianos and electronic keyboards are considered the ultimate teaching tool because they serve as a visual map of all music theory.
A standard piano keyboard features 88 keys (52 white- and 36 black keys). The full keyboard measures approximately 123cm long. The specific measurements for piano keys are standardized across most acoustic- and professional digital models. White keys are roughly 15cm long and 2.4cm wide, while black keys are roughly 9cm long and 1.4cm wide.
Unlike orchestral instruments (strings, e.g. violins; woodwinds, e.g. flutes; brass, e.g. trumpets) that only play one note at a time, the 88 keys of a piano and electronic keyboard visually display the entire spectrum of pitch, making it the most logical way to understand harmony.
The piano is the only instrument where the layout of music is displayed in a straight, linear sequence of notes. The repeating pattern of twelve notes (seven white keys and five black keys) makes intervals (the distance between notes) immediately obvious (visual clarity).
Striking a piano key instantly produces a beautiful, perfect tone (instant gratification and accessibility). This allows beginners to focus on musicality, rhythm and song structure from day one.
The keyboard spans the entire range of human hearing, allowing beginners to play basslines with the left hand, melodies with the right hand, and chords in between, acting as a complete, self-sufficient band (complete picture - melody, harmony and rhythm).
Playing the piano requires developing equal control over both the left and right hands, often performing two completely different rhythms at the same time (builds hand independence). This mental- and physical coordination transfers directly to other instruments, making future musical journeys much easier.
Standard key weighting - learning on an instrument with a full-size, 88-key keyboard typically provides weighted- or hammer-action keys. This resistance mimics and acoustic piano, building finger strength and the muscle memory necessary for long-term progression.
